Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz apologises for taking topless shots of 15-year-old Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus

Photographer Annie Leibovitz has apologised for the topless picture she took of squeaky-clean Disney star Miley Cyrus.
The legendary snapper caused massive controversy with the picture she took for the cover of Vanity Fair magazine, which shows 15-year-old Miley with her back exposed.
But today she insisted the portrait of the star of U.S. TV series Hannah Montana has been "misinterpreted" by its critics.

She said: "I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it.
"The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little make-up, and I think it is very beautiful."
She had been accused of manipulating Miley to get her to pose nude.
The teenager has apologised to fans for the suggestive snaps. She said the pictures, in which she appears to be topless with only a cream silk sheet wrapped around her body, were an "embarrassment".
"I was so honoured and thrilled to work with Annie," said Miley, who is worth around £500million.
"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed.
"I never intended for this to happen and I apologise to my fans.
"The pictures of me on the Internet were silly, inappropriate shots.
"I appreciate all the support of my fans and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect.
"I never intended for any of this to happen and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.
"Most of all I have let myself down. I will learn from my mistakes and trust my support team.
"My family and my faith will guide me through my life’s journey."
Although the star’s parents, country singer Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, attended the photo shoot, they left before the final shot.
However, Miley’s grandmother and teacher were there to see it taken.
A source close to the star said: "Annie convinced them it was going to be artistic. Her parents are mortified. But they know this is a learning moment for Miley.
"Originally she was in a flesh-coloured tank top but was asked to remove it."

Annie Leibovitz took the provocative picture exclusively for Vanity Fair
The Disney Channel last night attacked the photographs, claiming they had been taken "to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines".
However, Vanity Fair insisted the images are "a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley".
A spokesman added: "Miley’s parents and minders were on the set all day.
"When writer Bruce Handy interviewed Miley he asked her about the photo and she was very cheerful about it and thought it was perfectly fine."
Miley has also apologised for a separate set of racy pictures which have been posted on the Internet, one showing her with a bare midriff, draped over the lap of her ex-boyfriend, another revealing a green bra.
The June issue of Vanity Fair is out on May 1.

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Miley Cyrus took a break from shooting "The Last Song" on the Georgia coast by borrowing a guitar and treating fans to an impromptu, two-song performance on the patio of a beachside seafood restaurant.

"By the time she finished the first song, there must have been 50 little girls and their moms who came rushing up," said Ray Rogers, owner of StingRay’s restaurant on Tybee Island. He caught Miley’s surprise gig on video.
Rogers said the 16-year-old "Hannah Montana" star dined on snow crab legs with a friend after wrapping up Monday’s first day of filming of the Walt Disney Co. movie.
Then she got up and asked a local acoustic duo playing music if she could sit in. Miley stepped up to the microphone and strapped on a guitar to sing the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill duet "It’s Your Love," then added a new song of her own.
"She played those and then we got her out of here," Rogers said. "We asked her, `What do you wanna do?’ and she said `I want to get out of here.’ So we walked her to a side entrance nobody knew about and got her in her car."
"The Last Song" will be filming on Tybee Island and in nearby Savannah until mid-August, stirring interest among locals and tourists alike. The movie features Cyrus as a teenage girl struggling with her parents’ divorce who tries to reconnect with her father during a summer at his home in a quiet beach town.
The movie’s publicist, Rachel Aberly, did not immediately return a phone call and e-mail message seeking comment Wednesday.

تتطلع النجمة الشابة مايلي سيروس (16 عاما) لنجاحات أكبر من مسلسلها التليفزيوني الناجح «هانا مونتانا» حسبما قال والدها المطرب بيلي راي سيروس.
وقال بيلي راي الذي يشارك في المسلسل الناجح مع ابنته لبرنامج «أكسس هوليوود» إن طاقم العمل في المسلسل الذي اختتم مؤخرا تصوير الموسم الثالث سيستمر في العمل في المسلسل لموسم إضافي آخر بناء على طلب من مايلي.
وقال: «بصراحة، الفضل يرجع إلى مايلي للعمل في موسم جديد.. إنها لم ترغب في أن ينتهي المسلسل بما حدث في آخر حلقة منه» دون وضع نهاية واضحة.
وأضاف «إنها تريد بناء أحداث المسلسل لينتهي بتقديم مغزى أخلاقي لكيلا ينتهي ويبتعد الجميع وكأن شيئا لم يكن. إنها تريد نهاية رسمية لهانا مونتانا».
وقال سيروس إن فريق العمل في الفيلم سيصور آخر 11 حلقة مدة كل منها نصف ساعة بالإضافة إلى الحلقة الأخيرة في نهاية المسلسل والتي تستمر لمدة ساعة والتي ستعرض على الشاشة عام 2010.
وأضاف «سنبدأ الموسم الرابع في نهاية كانون الثاني/ يناير.. ينبغي أن ننتهي من العمل خلال الأسبوع الأول من حزيران/ يونيو في صيف العام المقبل».

Miley Cyrus is either taking one for the team by agreeing to a fourth season of Hannah Montana or not-so-humbly fulfilling the terms of her multi-year deal with Disney Channel. The singer’s father, Billy Ray, told Access Hollywood that he gives "a lot of credit to Miley for taking it another year. She didn’t want it to just end with whatever was the last episode we did. She wanted it to build to where there’s a moral to the story, to where it doesn’t just end and go away and that’s it. She wanted there to be an official ending to Hannah Montana."
But the singer-actress also had a contract to fulfill; a Disney source told EW that the network already had an option on Cyrus, 16, for a fourth season and simply decided to exercise it.
